Koizumi Beach has long been a favorite of beach goers in the Motoyoshi area just south of Kesennuma, but it has a new look these days. Construction on a massive seawall started after the tsunami, lining the back of the beach area, and over to the river inlet on the south side.

Breakwaters line the swimming area keeping wave activity to a minimum on the main beach. However, a bit down the beach, the construction of the massive cement bank along the river has created a perfect channel for waves to form at the rivermouth, attracting surfers from all over.

If you’re a surfer, or just looking for an easily accessible, beautiful strip of beach to spend the day at, consider taking the short drive down to koizumi Beach.
