There is a legend that a whale once led a fishing boat out of a storm to safe waters near the current location of Osaki Shrine. Thus, the spirit of this whale was enshrined here. On the morning of January 7th every year, the shrine offers sacred sake, fish, and salt to the whale. Since the whale is considered a messenger for the shrine, the shrine’s parishioners do not hunt or eat whale.
